Onondaga Ski Club
A Club For All Seasons
On May 13th we’ll hike at the Heiberg Memorial Forest, halfway between Tully and Truxton. See map attached below.
We’ll park in the first lot on the left side of Maple Ridge Road and, at 10:30, head out for about four miles of gorgeous forest hiking. With the elevation and exposure, Heiberg is a little behind many of the other local hiking areas, and we should be able to see a fair number of wildflowers.
Most of the hike will be on ESF’s forest access roads with good footing. However, early in the hike we’ll be going down an abandoned path where Mother Nature has cut an erratic drainage ditch that wanders from side to side, and requires a bit of going back and forth.(This is where it says “GATE” on the Truxton Hill Loop map.)
After that, your only worries will be an occasional muddy spot, some downed trees to easily climb over, and a couple of short but steep uphills. The reward will be walking through a variety of forests including upland hardwoods, 80 ft tall spruce trees, and some of ESF study plots.
